Success Stories

Traveling the World

Tutor Anda:

My mom was a literacy tutor over 25 years ago; so I knew of it, but not much. Then one October, I happened to be seated at a work function next to a volunteer and learned a bit more about the county programs. A couple of months later, I saw a flyer on a library bulletin board for prospective volunteers. By April, I’d completed my training, with a tote bag of books, binders, and notes. In May, I had met my first (and current) student.

The experience has been deeply enriching! I very much look forward to our meetings each week. We have travelled the world with Google Earth, enjoyed philosophical conversations, read news articles, and shared observations about the world around us. We usually meet in person, but also communicate with email – and we’ve even Skyped when circumstances like inclement weather prevented us from meeting in person.

My student has challenged me with his continuing and innate curiosity: he shares discovered podcasts and websites for English language learning which have added fresh materials to our lessons and have helped him see that he is one of many, all striving to improve their skills.

I am humbly grateful to LVSC for the opportunity the program has given me to give back to the community in which I have been lucky enough to raise my family and call my home.

Learner Bachittar:

My native country is India. I am here in the USA since 1997. Now I am citizen of United States of America. When I came here, I felt that I need to learn further English because most of people speak English here. So, I found a flyer of LVSC from the Bridgewater Library. I applied in person at the LVSC office and they gave me a very talented person to help me in learning English.

Anda is my tutor. She has very good experience and patience to teach a non-native English student. We started our study session in April 2014. We meet every Monday 6-7pm at the Bridgewater Library. If we are not able to meet in person for any reason we use skype or telephone to make our class regular. We started to learn English with the basic things such as how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency and how to tell a doctor about the health. She taught me about the Google website and she travelled with me many interesting places with the Google Earth app. We talked about philosophy of religions and some universal truths. She taught me about English grammar, idioms and much more. We studied the sixteen chapters of a book “Time and Space” together. I learned many new things about space and planets with this book.

We chose a goal to be able to prepare a talk about 10 minutes in length to present for a work-related event. We are stepping ahead toward the goal, to achieve the aim we use ESL Podcast, Easy English Newspaper, and voa.com etc. We enjoy our tutoring sessions very much. We went to an Indian restaurant to have a traditional dinner. She helped me to join the Bridgewater Gym last year. She assisted me about my i-phone like how to change a voice message and much more. In the end, I would like to say thanks to my tutor and all the members of LVSC for the opportunity provided me to learn something new and spend the time joyfully. Thanks all!
