Spotlight on Stella

Because she immigrated to the U.S as a child, Stella understands the challenges her students face trying to learn English.

Congratulations to Stella Tai, July 2026 Tutor of the Month!

LVSC Journey: I completed the online tutor training in February of 2022 and was matched with my first student in the same month.

What motivated you to become an LVSC volunteer? My family immigrated from Taiwan when I was 12. I experienced the difficulties of not understanding the English language. I became a tutor so I can help new immigrants and hope to make their transition a bit easier.

Stella (right) with student Nakyung.Proud/Inspiring/Memorable LVSC Moment: I gave my students two words in the beginning of 2026. I asked them to think about the words “challenges” and “courage” in their daily lives. Soon after, one of my students asked me to take a look at her resume because she was applying for a job. Unfortunately, she didn’t get any response and it was very discouraging to her. Three weeks later, she called me to say she applied for another job and she got a response for a phone interview. I was so excited and so proud of her because she took the initiative to apply for another job herself.

Day Job:  I am a happily retired Postmaster. My current "day job" is to go to the senior center to exercise and socialize. I also volunteer and teach line dance at the center.

Hobbies:  I love music and dance. I listen to different genres of music. I especially like Doo Wop, Country, R&B and Classical. I also like to (try to) paint.

Favorite Quote: My favorite quote is “Words have the power to destroy or heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change the world.” This is teaching from Buddha.

Favorite Food: I am adventurous when it comes to food. When I go on vacation, I always like to try different local foods. I like Chinese (of course), Japanese, Greek and Spanish.

Favorite Book: I am not really a reader, but I do periodically pick up a memoir that’s interesting to me. I enjoyed “Becoming” by Michelle Obama.

R&R Spot: I like to walk outdoors. It’s simple and easy. Put on my headphones and walk.
