Congratulations to Sau, February 2025 Tutor of the Month!

Learn more about Sau:
LVSC Journey: I started tutoring my first student in February of 2023. My family immigration experience is why I joined LVSC. Being an immigrant myself, I understand the challenges of assimilating to a new country. I was four years old when our family came to the U.S. My transition was much easier compared to my parents and sister who immigrated when they were adults.
Rewarding LVSC Moment: I am often taken aback when a student tells me that I am the only person they speak English to. It just reminds me of how isolating it can be for them. Being an English tutor is more than just teaching English. You are sharing culture, history and overall how things work in America. I find it most rewarding when I hear how they have applied what was taught and practiced into a real-life setting, like talking to other parents at school or chit-chatting with neighbors.
Day Job: I am retired, but prior to this I was a Project Manager. Upon retirement, I wanted to find meaningful volunteer work as a way to give back.
Pastimes: I love to read and have been with my book club for over 20 years! I also enjoy entertaining, traveling to different countries to learn about their histories, building miniature houses, exercising, and staying healthy.
Favorite Quote: A favorite family quote we live by is “When life gives you lemons, you make the best lemonade you can.” It teaches us to always look for the positive and make the most out of everything that comes our way!
Favorite Food: I love different Asian foods – Chinese, Japanese, Thai. I also love Mediterranean flavors, especially Greek cuisine.
Favorite Book: I have so many! Here are some of my favorites – Pride and Prejudice - by Jane Austen – such a romantic, feminist classic from the 1800s. More recently, I have enjoyed Cutting for Stone, The Dutch House, The Women, and Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. I could go on and on with this question!
R&R Spot: My ideal afternoon is spent on my screened-in porch reading, coloring, or doing a crossword puzzle.
