Spotlight on Silvia

"Being an immigrant myself, I understand many of the issues arising from living in a new culture and learning its language."

LVSC Journey: I became an LVSC volunteer in 2015. After retiring early that year, I knew I wanted to help others in a meaningful way. In my exploration of various charitable organizations, I came across an article about LVSC. After reading it, I felt it fit the bill. Being an immigrant myself (from Italy) through marriage, I understood many of the issues arising from living in a new culture, and speaking its language. I was fortunate enough to already speak English (British) fairly well, and have a very articulate husband who explained to me the many American idiomatic expressions (ex. “ being in the dog house?!?”). In addition, having been both a student and a teacher of World Languages for several years, I am aware of the difficulties in acquiring a new language.

Memorable LVSC Moments: So far I have led a conversation group and taught five students – all with unique personalities and different experiences. Their willingness to share their life journey with me has enriched mine, and seeing their progress is most gratifying!! I taught a student who already spoke two languages, another for whom not only was I a teacher but also a mother figure, and for another a mentor. My current student is a young mother. One day, my student shared some information with me about her son, who is in 4th grade, that led me to suggest reading a children’s book together with him. So much fun! One day, I asked her son if he liked reading the book with his mom: his answer was “I’m loving it!” That made me feel so good!

Silvia and her son-in-law compete in LVSC's Annual Community Spelling Bee, 2018.

Day Job: Retired since early 2015. I keep active babysitting, doing most of my favorite hobbies, teaching for LVSC , helping with the Spelling Bee, and a couple of other volunteer jobs.

Favorite Quotes & Mottos: “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again,” a Scottish general. “First duty, then pleasure,” work ethics from my dad. Last but certainly not least, ”Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount.

Favorite Food: First choice: homemade Italian fresh pasta dishes!! I also enjoy French, Thai, Indian, Korean, Mexican and vegetarian dishes.

Making tortellini.

Hobbies: Cooking, reading, music -all the arts in general, gardening (flowers and vegetables), traveling and walking.

Favorite Book: This is a difficult choice – too many books to choose from! Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is one because it reminds me of a very happy time in my early adolescence in Italy…and the character Jo was our hero (we even put on a play!!). Recently, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, a gripping, poignant book celebrating the courage and resiliency of the human spirit.

R&R Spot: A sunny beach, reading a book, possibly listening to classical music, the sound of the water, and looking out at the expansive sea or ocean – so awesome yet relaxing. And, of course, spending time with my children and grandchildren!!
