Spotlight on Joanna

Joanna's parents were immigrants to the U.S., so she knows how challenging and isolating it can be to navigate a new country.

LVSC Journey: I was motivated to become an LVSC volunteer because I enjoyed tutoring throughout college and wanted to continue engaging with my community in that way. My parents were immigrants to the U.S., so growing up, I witnessed how challenging and isolating it can be to navigate a new country and language. Through one-on-one lessons, I hope to make immigrants like my parents feel more at home here.

Best LVSC Moment: My entire experience working with my student has been memorable and inspiring. Through this past year, she has navigated the pandemic while also starting a family and preparing to jump-start her career in the medical field here. It has been so rewarding to see her become a mom and to meet her adorable little girl virtually. Despite the big changes that have happened in her life, she has been dedicated to learning English. Her efforts have seriously paid off and her language skills and confidence have grown immensely!
