Spotlight on Mary
Mary went to college at night when she was a 28-year-old mother of two. Including LVSC, she has been teaching for 50+ years!
LVSC Journey: I have always loved teaching. I taught in public schools from 1972 until 2004 and then became an adjunct professor at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) for the next 14 years. I had to retire from RVCC in 2018 at age 78 because of upcoming surgery. I was able to continue teaching yoga until age 80. Counting LVSC, I have been teaching for over 50 years. I was happy to learn of the opportunity to tutor for LVSC from friend and former tutor Marilyn O’Regan. I first became an LVSC volunteer in October 2021 after completing the online tutor training.
Memorable LVSC Moment: When {students} Ming and Rongxin said, “You’re our first American friend,” and when they told me they wanted to study for the U.S. citizenship test.
Day Job: As a retiree living in a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I enjoy growing vegetables in my garden plot, attending lectures and concerts, and contributing to my community on various committees.
Favorite Proverb: “Give me a fish, and I'll eat for a day. Teach me to fish, and I'll eat for a lifetime.”
Passions: My passions used to be skiing, hiking, yoga, bicycling, traveling and teaching. The only one of those that I can still do is teaching.
Favorite Book: The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. As a 28-year-old-mother of two toddlers, it changed my life because it inspired me to attend college at night and become a teacher.
R&R Spot: My garden.
