Spotlight on Linda

Linda was encouraged by a friend to become a literacy volunteer and has loved every moment of her tutoring experience.

Congratulations to Linda Conroy, June 2025 Tutor of the Month!

As an employee in the surgical healthcare field, Linda was matched with a student who was a critical care nurse in her native Chile and is working toward becoming a certified nurse in the U.S. Their lessons focus on medical terminology and conversations around healthcare. Linda’s student practices written English by taking stances and offering opinions on news stories and arts and culture reviews.

Learn More About Linda:

LVSC Journey: I learned about LVSC in the early fall of 2024. After an orientation call I dove right in, knowing this would be a wonderful opportunity for me.

What motivated you to become an LVSC volunteer? A friend of mine works with the literacy program in Morris County. She continues to work with students in her area and felt I would find it to be a great experience as well. Promoting literacy has always been an important issue for our family. My daughter’s career is in education. She works with recent immigrants in the DC area and knows how important literacy is to their education, job opportunities, health and social integration.

Inspiring & Memorable LVSC Moments: My student and her husband were both critical care nurses in their home country, Chile. We continue to meet for multiple sessions weekly to provide her with vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension assignments to help her receive her credentials/licensing for nursing here in NJ. I am so inspired by her. She works in a low-level position each evening, cares for her two young children and provides a home for them while still finding time to focus on her literacy assignments daily. Every time she makes a breakthrough it’s a memorable moment!

Day Job: I work for a surgical healthcare practice.

Hobbies:  I love to spend time with my family: my husband of almost 40 years, three grown children (daughter and two sons), son-in-law and daughter-in-law, and a brand new grandson, born in January! I also love to read, exercise (run, swim, bike) and paint with watercolors and acrylics.

Linda and her family.

Favorite Quote: Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets. “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.” It stresses the importance for me to dream that a much better world is possible.

Favorite Food: I love fish, fresh fruits and vegetables and sometimes a sweet treat!
