Meet Kathy, September 2025 Tutor of the Month
Spotlight on Kathy
Kathy is an LVSC tutor for individuals and small groups and is also passionate about helping children and animals.
Congratulations to Kathy Kolvites, September 2025 Tutor of the Month!
Kathy started her LVSC journey as a tutor for a woman from Guatemala and currently works with a learner from Peru. In addition, Kathy trained on the Burlington English curriculum and teaches a small group of beginners. Kathy has also been a dog trainer for almost 20 years and also takes time out to take care of her pet goats! As a former public school nurse, Kathy is an activist for both children and animals.
LVSC Journey: I first became an LVSC volunteer in the spring of 2020. I did the training online, as in-person training was canceled due to Covid. I had retired in June 2019 so I was interested in finding ways I could help my community.
What motivated you to become an LVSC volunteer? I was motivated to become an LVSC volunteer because, after decades of working in the public schools as a school nurse, I knew how hard it is for individuals and their families to live and succeed in the USA when they do not speak English.
Inspiring LVSC Moment: It has been very inspiring to hear my students tell me they enjoyed the class or that the class was fun. I really enjoy hearing them laugh when we play a competitive English learning game related to a lesson. I am so impressed with the students who work so hard in their regular jobs yet take the time to come to class before or after work.
Day Job: I am retired, so my “day” job consists of walking the dog, walking with friends, caring for my goats, and yard work! I also volunteer one day a week at the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) program.
Hobbies: My hobbies are dog training (I have been going to classes with dogs for almost 20 years), walking with my dog or friends, reading and baking. My passion is being an activist for animal and child rights.
Favorite Quote: “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” - Aesop
Favorite Food: My favorite food is cheesecake – plain.
Favorite Book: I read many books a year, but I don’t have a favorite author. Mostly, I enjoy books that are realistic fiction.
R&R Spot: My favorite spot for R&R is to go to the family farm in Hunterdon County, which I do every day, year-round. It is so beautiful, peaceful and full of nature.
