Spotlight on Kathy

Kathy started her LVSC journey in January 2023 and has tutored three students from three different countries since then.

Congratulations to Kathy Memoli, August 2025 Tutor of the Month!

Kathy, a retired librarian, works with her students on real-life scenarios. She helped one student design and print promotional materials at Staples for a cleaning business. Kathy walked around downtown Somerville with another student who wanted to learn more about the area. Not only has Kathy tutored three different students, she also assesses new students when they sign up for LVSC’s services.

Learn More About Kathy:

LVSC Journey: I attended the online tutor workshop in January 2023 and had my first meeting with my first student, Tugba, in February. I worked with Tugba until she and her family relocated to California in June 2024.

Proud LVSC Moment: Tugba was selected to speak on LVSC's Cultural Connections panel. This was a milestone as she was initially very shy. I was so proud to hear her speak to an audience of tutors!

Day Job: I am retired.

Hobbies:  I love to read, garden and travel.

Favorite Quote: Since I read David Copperfield by Charles Dickens in 9th grade, I have always loved a line by Wilkins Micawber: “Procrastination is the thief of time.” Now that I am retired, I have to admit that procrastination has been stealing a lot of time, and I don’t mind it at all as it allows more time for reading!

Favorite Food: Anything I don’t have to cook! I especially enjoy Indian and Italian.

Favorite Book: There are so many, and so many of them relate to different times in my life. Horse by Geraldine Brooks is probably my most recent favorite read.

R&R Spot:  Somewhere quiet by water, especially the ocean off-season.
