Tutor Spotlights

Counselor, mentor and advocate. Those are just a few of the words you could use to describe LVSC’s 2026 Tutor of the Year, June Tamburro.

With her wealth of experience as a pastoral leader, it was obvious that June found yet another calling as a dedicated tutor when she joined LVSC in the winter of 2020. Her students, now totaling six, from Brazil, Georgia, Peru and Korea, truly benefit from her patience, wisdom and gentle reassurances. June said she also benefits from her relationships with her students:

I’m inspired first and foremost by our students, and most especially the students I’ve been privileged to work with. They show up week after week and do the incredibly hard, hard work of learning a new language to improve their lives here in the U.S. They teach me so many important lessons for life and I receive far more than I can ever give. It’s pure joy to be a tutor.

June is also a conversation group leader. She spends numerous hours putting together lesson plans on topics that are relevant, impactful and yet fun. In a recent series, June taught her students all about the game of baseball, America’s pastime. The lesson included a little singing, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” explanations of rules and Cracker Jacks for the whole class.

Monica, one of the regulars in that class, said June’s leadership has been invaluable:

I truly appreciate the time and effort June puts into preparing interesting topics for our discussion. She creates a welcoming and supportive environment, where everyone feels comfortable participating and sharing their ideas. June has encouraged me and many other students to be brave, speak up in class and believe in our ability to communicate in English. Thank you June for your patience, kindness and commitment. For helping people like me feel included, supported and connected in this country.
