Tutor Spotlights
Meet Christopher, July 2025 Tutor of the Month
Spotlight on Christopher
Christopher is extremely proud to be a certified ESL tutor and is inspired daily by his student.
Congratulations to Christopher Yen, July Tutor of the Month!
Christopher’s student has come a long way since they started working together in the fall of 2024. Because Alejo is a guitarist, he wants to be able to introduce his songs in English, so they’ve been focusing on pronunciation and idioms. Alejo also got a job as a crossing guard, so lessons focus on English small talk with students and parents. Most recently he was offered a full-time music teaching position, complete with benefits!
Learn More About Christopher:
LVSC Journey: My first tutoring session with Alejo began in October 2024 at the Bernardsville Public Library.
What motivated you to become an LVSC volunteer? As a retiree, I wanted to spend some of my free time giving back to the community. LVSC was the perfect place to offer my services.
Proud Moment: One of my proudest moments was completing the training program and earning my LVSC certificate, officially designating me as an LVSC ESL tutor. Also, Alejo’s ongoing improvement in English pronunciation inspires me every time we meet.
Day Job: I volunteer at The Food Bank Network of Somerset County (located in Bridgewater), putting in about 20-30 hours per week. Tasks include driving the van for donation pickups, sorting and general warehouse assignments. I also serve on the Food Bank’s board.
Hobbies: Reading, playing guitar and golf (I continue to chase golf’s holy grail…the hole-in-one!)
Favorite Quote: “To get through the hardest journey, we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep stepping.” – Chinese Proverb
Favorite Food: A nice, medium-rare prime rib, complete with the fixins’!
Favorite Book: To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee
R&R Spot: My backyard deck. Nothing better than to lounge around on a nice spring/summer day with a good book and a nice, cool beverage!
