Spotlight on Cathy

After helping adult learners in California, Cathy moved to New Jersey where she now tutors a woman from Peru.

Congratulations to Cathy Guberer, October 2025 Tutor of the Month!

After Cathy’s student indicated that she wanted to better communicate with her children’s teachers and coaches, Cathy first helped her craft emails. Then, they steadily progressed through conversational English and Paolo is now  confident enough to volunteer at her children’s school! A relationship that started as tutor/student had blossomed into friend/friend!

LVSC Journey:  I signed up to be an LVSC volunteer in the fall of 2023.  I was very interested and motivated to become a tutor after being a literacy volunteer tutor in Southern California, specifically for the Conejo Valley Adult Education Program. My husband and I lived in the Ventura County area for over five years, and I tutored most of that time, especially during the pandemic when everything was virtual. I tutored students from many walks of life and found it to be very fulfilling.

Proud/Inspiring/Memorable LVSC Moment: A proud LVSC moment for me was when I completed training, but the most inspiring and memorable was when I realized that I was making a difference in my student’s life.

Day Job: I’m semi-retired, but I still maintain a New Jersey real estate license as a referral agent. Prior to that I worked in publishing for Sports Illustrated and People magazines.

Hobbies: I absolutely love astronomy and recently joined the NJ Astronomical Association! I love hiking and I have a passion for cooking.

Favorite Quote:  My mom used to say, “There’s a price to pay for everything!” But I really love inspirational quotes, like “I can do all things through God who strengthens me.” I’m pretty spiritual.

Favorite Food: My favorite food is chocolate gelato.

Favorite Book: My all-time favorite book is Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” which Paola and I read together last year (yes, not easy!). I’m a huge Jane Austen fan and even went to see her home in England.

R&R Spot: For R&R, any form of nature, be it in the woods, beach or even walking in my neighborhood, does it for me.
