Spotlight on Bebi
At LVSC's Annual Meeting & Recognition Night, Bebi thanked the LVSC community for making dreams come true.
Congratulations to Bebi Hassan, LVSC's 2025 Student of the Year!
I want to thank this group for making dreams come true. -2025 Student of the Year, Bebi Hassan
Bebi is from Afghanistan. She is married to a very supportive husband and is the mother of four children. Although she only had a few years of schooling in her native county, she has learned to speak English fluently. Her struggle is reading and writing. Learning to read and write at any age is not easy – and like everything else, it gets harder as you get older. It requires a tremendous amount of perseverance, hard work and dedication.
Bebi came to LVSC because she knew it was essential for her to improve her literacy for her children, her daily activities, and for achieving her long-term goals of finding a job and becoming a U.S. Citizen.
I dream that I can learn to read and write! I know that will be a game changer for me. My other dream was to get citizenship, and I did it!
Bebi was matched with her tutor, Elaine, in May of 2023. They immediately clicked, creating a great working relationship and a strong friendship. They meet for lessons at the library multiple times a week.
Elaine explained how she was able to help Bebi achieve one of her long-term goals.
Shortly into our time working together. Bebi decided she wanted to get citizenship. So, we pivoted to studying for the citizenship test. Bebi worked so hard. As her husband would say: "Bebi eats, sleeps, and breathes the Constitution!" In addition to all our lessons together, Bebi would listen to audio apps in the car and watch citizenship test videos at home. Then what a wonderful day, I had the pleasure of sharing with Bebi and her husband; the day she took the test and received citizenship!
With one huge goal accomplished, Bebi and Elaine went back to focusing on general English literacy. Slowly they are making progress. Elaine shared this story:
One-time Bebi was happy to tell me that she was able to text her son. I smiled when she showed me. She had texted "Did you eat before work?” The text of a great mom!
