Student Spotlights
Meet Veronica, 2022 Student of the Year
Spotlight on Veronica
“I received classes in English through other programs but I never learned as much as I have learned with LVSC.”
For a student to reach her goals, she must go beyond meeting with her tutor once a week. She must put in the time and the hard work to learn English, to push herself every day, to stay motivated and not get discouraged. That is a lot to ask of any student, but Veronica Perez is not just any student.
Veronica is originally from Honduras and now lives in Somerset County. She began working with her tutor, Christine, in February of 2020 – one month before we went into Covid-19 lockdown - so most of their tutoring has been virtual. Despite that, Christine and Veronica have made tremendous strides.
Christine was very proud to introduce Veronica at LVSC's Annual Meeting and Recognition Night.
I may be the English language tutor and Veronica the student; but I am also a student. Veronica has been my tutor by opening my eyes to the everyday reality of being a non-English speaking person in the United States. -Tutor Christine
Christine explained the progress she and Veronica have made together. “Things started slowly but week by week we have progressed, and I can honestly say that Veronica is not the same shy, quiet young woman I met two years ago. She is one of the most resilient people I have ever met. She has an incredibly strong work ethic. She never passes up an opportunity to learn; nor is she afraid of a challenge. She has become so much more independent with her ability to navigate everyday life in the U.S."
To say I am proud of Veronica would be a great understatement. I am in awe of her, and I am so very thrilled that she has been recognized with this wonderful honor. -Tutor Christine
When Veronica accepted her award, surrounded by family and friends, she impressed the gathering with her poise and confidence. She spoke about working with Christine and about her literacy journey. She said, “I am happy to have Christine as my tutor. She is patient. She knows when I don’t understand something; she takes the time to explain it until I do understand." Veronica went on to explain some of the many milestones she has achieved:
I am now less nervous when I speak in English. I am more confident. For example, when I go the doctor we don’t have to use a translator any more. I can go to the store alone and watch movies in English without subtitles. -Veronica
Veronica knows that her English language journey is just beginning but she is excited to continue working with Christine and towards achieving her personal goals.
I like the LVSC program and I want to continue with classes to improve my English. I am very grateful to LVSC and Christine for giving me this opportunity to learn English. -Veronica
