Improving Lives Through Literacy
According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, there are at least 34 million adults living in the U.S. whose literacy skills are so limited that they cannot function effectively in society or develop their full potential as a family member, worker and citizen.
Adult illiteracy is a significant problem in our community. Statistics show that four in ten adults in New Jersey cannot perform basic skills such as locating an intersection on a street map, identifying and entering information on an application or calculating the total cost on an order form.
The services provided by Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County helps to positively impact the community because improved literacy reduces poverty, crime, homelessness, and the number of welfare recipients. It also lowers training costs and increases worker productivity for businesses.
Helping adults improve their basic literacy skills also has a direct and measurable impact on both the education and quality of life of their children. The National Institute for Literacy has found that children of adults who participate in literacy programs improve their grades and test scores, improve their reading skills, and are less likely to drop out.
